Joining the US Army or Air Force National Guard is a good way to serve your country, but recruits should get all of the information that they need to make educated decisions about whether they want to join the National Guard instead of another military branch like the Navy or Marines. Many civilians choose to join the Army National Guard because the troops are not usually deployed to active duty overseas. Instead, their drills typically focus on armory protection, state and national security, and other domestic services. One of the best ways to decide if you want to join a National Guard unit is to contact your local enlistment center so that you can talk to a recruitment officer about the advantages and disadvantages of joining. The layout of this organization allows some recruits to join on a reserve basis. National Guard Reserves usually focus on serving their country in regional locations and they only participate on a part-time basis. Essentially, the reserves are a small militia group that can be called to duty by the governor. Under extreme circumstances, your unit might be called to protect the state from a foreign invasion, but for the most part you assist in less dangerous activities like crowd control, directing traffic, and aiding in natural disasters. Ask the recruitment officers to give you information about all of the benefits that you can get from joining the guard. If you are interested in participating in military service, then this might be a good option for you.
